Smoothie Suggestions…

For some weeks now, given all the dumpstered fruits, we’ve had an up swing of smoothie making for certain people in the house. Just making things up as per the usual…

There was one particular score where we happened to pick up over 20 boxes of basil. Much of this went into the biggest tub of pesto we’ve ever made (yes it was delicious), some went into pizza, but about 10 boxes went into a half completed attempt at making lime-basil sorbet.  A lack of limes to the basil ration left a highly concentrated basil sorbet with hints of lime. Not exactly a summer treat. Turns out the mixture is just the right thing to plop into recent smoothie experiments.

These are some varieties:

2 Pears + 1/2 c Aloe Juice (or water) + 1 Spoon Basil/Lime mixture + Ice

2 Bananas + 1/2 c Aloe Juice (water) + 2-3 Spoons Basil/Lime mixture + Ice

2 Pears + 1/2 Banana + Aloe Juice + 2 Spoons Basil/Lime + Ice

Pear + Banana + Cranberry Juice + Basil/Lime + Ice

We’ve also just decided that our blueberry and strawberry wines are done fermenting and ready to drink. The blueberry turned out a bit too sweet for our taste and the strawberry was a bit thin and boozy so we ended up combining a good deal of it to make a really delicious looking (and tasting) strawberry-blueberry wine. And because we had more strawberry we also ended up with about 5 liters of Strawberry-Basil/Lime Wine.

Drink up:)

The US currently has no regulations calling for the labeling of genetically modified organisms. This needs to be changed: http://justlabelit.org

Do you know what you’re eating? Currently,
61% of Corn
91% of Soybeans
71% Cotton
consumed in the United States is genetically modified (and its future implications on wild species therefore unknown).

Quinoa – is one of many products that is unfortunately being gobbled up by American / European neoliberalism

BOMB pasta sauce:

1) mix cashews, nutritional yeast, bell peppers, onions, and almond milk (or soy milk) in the food processor

2) boil with caramelized onions and more almond milk and water

Backpacking in Big Sur

This last weekend a crew of coopers and others went backpacking in Big Sur to Sykes Hot Springs. It’s a 10-mile hike out, but we all stopped at a campsite 7 miles in instead cause we were exhausted.

The venerable Max B. said that it was the most intense outing the coop’s ever been on.  Sometimes I feel like the new crop of coopers (myself included) never quite live up to the OGs, so it was nice to hear that we’re still stretching and expanding this TTT thing.

Personal reflections:

Good times all around, though as one of those nagging radical activists, I feel weird being surrounded by so much luxury (trees, a creek, hot springs, pit toilets) and not having any way to do political work for 4 whole days.  It almost seems as grotesque to me as those billionaires who sit in their mansions all day and have their servants peel and hand-feed them grapes.

Nature gets fetishized a lot these days and I often see very little value in this fetishization.  If you think “nature” is a valuable thing, then you shouldn’t be orgasming over it in the wilderness, but attacking those parts of society that destroy “nature.”  I think some of my fellow coopers might disagree with me on this point :/

gripe, gripe, gripe. hahahahahaha.

Of course it was a terribly wonderful time and I’m looking forward to the next adventure!!!!!!

Egypt Erupts

The World is changing!

Nothing is the same!

We are witnessing a new reality!

The martyrs are being avenged!

How small are our lives in the face of history…

And yet how much power we hold in our hands.
