The Technicolor Tree Tribe is a students’ housing co-op nestled in the neighborhood surrounding the University of Southern California. The house where the tribe currently lives is known simply as The Co-op. We believe in community-style living, conscientiousness, equality, sustainability, and do-it-yourself. Some of our fantastic endeavors include a house-wide vegan cooking group, skill-building workshops, Sunday potluck meetings, and much more! We strive to encourage and empower all of our members through open communication and discussion about issues of oppression and discrimination. The Coop is an alternative housing solution that offers peace, solace, and community for those seeking down-to-earth and progressive-minded friends and housemates.

How it All Began:
Flying The Coop by Tani Ikeda
They were extraordinary dreamers
I might even say bold
At a school that did not value recycling, energized football fans instead of
student protests, and only had a free speech zone open from 12-2pm
These bold dreamers decided to create a co-op
A space that could be free, brown, feminine, green, and queer despite their
danger
A place that invited an active readiness for the Marvelous, the spontaneous,
da funky and delicious
A space that stood for the end of racism, materialism, sexism, and
militarism
Where the house was always jamming with drum beats, guitar riffs and voices,
full of laughter, home brew, and the occasional earthquake of love.
Our freedom dreams changed who we were
Because of what we believed
Because we said yes to the unknown, to our ideals, to evolving
The Technicolor Tree Tribe transformed us from people into birds
Growing our souls
To stretch through prisons and borders of all kinds
To speak with dignified rage and critique as a form of love
To sing down to the skin and
Dance on table tops
In the city of Los Angeles, best known for its Lipo-glamour-fame
Our presence was pointing a new way…
